Health Bulletin: Acupuncture and Physical Therapy
Dear Family, Friends, and Clients, I have some exciting news that I would like to share with each of you! I have been a traveling practitioner of acupuncture and massage therapy for the past 9 years and as of this month, I now have office space! I am working at AON Physical Therapy & Wellness, PLLC in White Plains, New York, offering acupuncture as a complimentary healing modality in conjunction with physical therapy. It was important for me to grow my practice in order to adapt to the changing needs of my clients, as well as my own. This opportunity allows for more flexible options to accommodate scheduling issues as well as make acupuncture treatments more affordable. With this new office space, I am able to offer acupuncture treatments at an incredibly reduced rate. The initial evaluation is $50 and only $25 for each follow up treatment, which lasts for approximately 30 minutes. For those of you who have already received treatments from me, no initial evaluation is necessary, and the follow up treatments would be $25 per session. My hours at AON are as follows: Monday- 9am-12pm Wednesday- 9am-12pm Friday- 12pm- 3pm AON Physical Therapy & Wellness, PLLC 244 Westchester Avenue Suite 217 White Plains, NY 10604 (914) 328-6016 As many of you may know, I began my healthcare career at Burke Rehabilitation Hospital working as a physical/occupational therapy aide. During my employment at Burke, I met a fantastic physical therapist who contributed to my education about the intricacies of the body and the rehabilitation process. After 14 years, I have recently reconnected with my “old” friend who is now a physical therapist at AON and was open to the idea of integrating acupuncture into a physical therapy clinical setting. As with other traditional medical professionals, he understands the benefits of Oriental Medicine and embraces the rationale that complementary medicine is a legitimate modality to help treat pain and hence, offered me this wonderful opportunity to join him and his fantastic team at AON as an acupuncturist. Acupuncture has been proven effective in treating pain and suffering in patients with widespread medical conditions. A study in the American Journal of Chinese Medicine concluded that acupuncture, in conjunction with physical therapy, was beneficial in treating cases of frozen shoulder. What made this study intriguing was that it concluded that acupuncture and physical therapy each had its own strengths in the rehabilitation process. The overall outcome was very positive and all patients showed great improvement in their quality of life and range of motion; whether they used acupuncture or physical therapy. Of the 75 people who participated in the study, 30 received acupuncture, 30 received physical therapy, and 15 received both. Those who received acupuncture had better pain relief, and those who received physical therapy had better rage of motion, while those who received both, had the best overall results. Please click of the link below to read the study in more detail. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17080543 So, for those of you in need of physical rehabilitation, I strongly recommend adding acupuncture and physical therapy to your weekly health care routine to help increase your range of motion and allow you to perform necessary tasks with minimal pain and suffering. There are many more holistic alternatives to help your specific condition, so please feel free to contact me to discuss your individual case, or better yet, come to my new office and check out the physical therapy center! Although I am now giving treatments at AON, I have no intention on giving up making house calls. I am still available to give holistic health treatments in the privacy of your own home and during a convenient time that fits into your busy schedule. As I have mentioned before, I send you these health bulletins because I care about you and your health. Please share these e-mails with friends and loved ones who may find this important information helpful and interesting in their paths for a healthier lifestyle. I am still offering a “Spring Healing Special”, where I will give each of you an extra 15 minutes of massage for any referral you send to me, as a special thank you! With the best of health & happiness, Jack Pessin M.S., L.Ac., L.M.T. www.gatewayacupuncture.com info@gatewayacupuncture.com 914-393-3560

Health Bulletin: Relieving Headaches with Acupuncture
April 2009 Health Bulletin: Relieving Headaches with Acupuncture
Dear Family, Friends, and Clients,
First, I would like to thank everyone who attended my “Self Healing Through Acupressure and Massage” workshop at the Wainwright House in Rye, NY. It was a huge success and the turn out was far greater than I had expected. I was thrilled to see so many people so interested in learning holistic ways to take better care of themselves and their families…it was a truly uplifting experience. There is so much more information to cover regarding self healing, that I have been asked to give additional seminars at the Wainwright House this upcoming Summer and Fall. I will keep you posted regarding these dates since each of you may be able to benefit from learning holistic alternatives to achieving better health! Now onto the topic of the month: Most people know that acupuncture is very effective in treating pain. One area that many of us can relate to is the dreaded headache or migraine. Unlike other pain conditions, I think most people have experienced one kind of headache or another. Whether you have or are currently suffering from a tension, cluster, sinus, migraine, or other type of headache, there is growing research showing that acupuncture is proven effective in treating all types of headaches. For those of you looking to avoid over-the-counter and prescription medication, acupuncture, massage and meditation can really help you overcome headaches without having to pop another pill!
In researching acupuncture and pain management, I have found that headaches are one of the most documented conditions that benefit from this ancient yet complementary medicine. I want to briefly share with you just two of the many studies on the treatment of headache with the use of acupuncture. The first study is from The British Medical Journal (BMJ) March 15th, 2004 and the second study is from The Journal Headache 2008 Volume 48, number 3. Both studies report that significant improvements were seen in patients suffering headaches after receiving acupuncture. While acupuncture studies have not been widely documented in the scientific method, there are thousands of years of experience that will eventually make their way into both scientific and medical journals. Please see the links for further information: http://www.bmj.com/cgi/content/full/328/7442/744 http://journal.medscape.com/viewarticle/572382 According to Oriental Medicine there are several reasons why people get headaches. This subject of headaches is too grand for this Health Bulletin alone, but the overall consensus is that headaches are caused by either a deficiency or excess of your body’s Chi and Blood, as well as certain other external and pathogenic factors. Depending on your specific case, acupuncture helps to rebalance the Yin and the Yang, tonify the Chi and the Blood and unblock the meridians which are causing the pain. Many of my patients have developed headaches from remnants of the common cold and flu, which often lead to sinus pressure/headaches. Individuals with TMJ disorder, generally find themselves clenching their jaw so much, that the muscles in their heads become contracted and cause searing pain by the temples. And of course, there are those of you who stare at a computer screen all day long, straining your eyes and reading with your shoulders and postures hunched over a desk. All of these headaches are caused by very different sources, and many require different treatment protocols. Some individuals may benefit from only acupuncture, massage, or even herbal medicine, but combining these treatments together or with other healing modalities can be proven even more effective in treating headaches. When treating a person with headaches, I located the area and channels that are involved and apply direct pressure to those points on the body. There are times where I may only treat distal points, or points that are far away from the head like the hands and feet which I target to draw the pain away from the affected area. This kind of treatment may be indicated where there is intense pressure in the head and any more stimulation would be overwhelming. There are other times where I will put in local points located along the head, face, and neck to help drain the pain away from the head and dissipate it to other areas of the body. There are many more things you can do to avoid or manage headaches, and incorporating regular acupuncture and massage into your daily routine is a fantastic way to avoid such pain! Please feel free to contact me to discuss your individual case to get you back on track to a healthier spring season. Remember, I give these holistic health treatments in the privacy of your own home and during a convenient time that fits into your busy schedule. As I have mentioned before, I send you these health bulletins because I care about you and your health. Please share these e-mails with friends and loved ones who may find this important information helpful and interesting in their paths for a healthier lifestyle. I am also offering a “Spring Healing Special”, where I will give each of you an extra 15 minutes of massage for any referral you send to me, as a special thank you!

January 2009 Health Bulletin: Beating the Winter Blues with Acupuncture and Massage Therapy! Dear Family, Friends, and Clients, Today is a very auspicious day! It is the first New Moon of 2009 and the beginning of the Chinese New Year; the year of the Ox. What makes this unique period of time so special is that a New Moon symbolizes limitless potential, and the sign of the Ox represents prosperity through hard work. So, a very Happy Chinese New Year to each of you and welcome to my first Health Bulletin of 2009. Many of us are thankful that the New Year will bring a fresh start and a renewed feeling of hope. However, all this cold weather and extra snow can also have a detrimental effect on many of us called the “Winter Blues.” Someone experiencing a case of the "Winter Blues" may notice some weight gain, extra fatigue, difficulty getting out of bed, and varying levels of depression during the winter doldrums. These symptoms are also associated with a condition known as Seasonal Affective Disorder or SAD, which affects millions of people each year (about 75% of which are women). The Chinese explanation for the Winter Blues is that the winter season tends to suppress the Yang (heat & light) and increases the Yin (cold & darkness), leading to a feeling of cold within the body and often, a depressed immune system. Although a natural seasonal cycle, during this time of year, we need to conserve our energy and retain as much internal body heat as possible. The Winter Blues/SAD can begin as early as late autumn and can last until spring time. Thankfully, there are many holistic ways to combat a case of the Winter Blues and help move your Chi, uplift your spirits, and boost your overall health and well-being such as incorporating regular acupuncture and massage therapies into your health care routines. For beating the Winter Blues, I would recommend a brisk scalp massage first thing in the morning to help stimulate your brain. Moving the chi in your head will give you an instantaneous feeling of energy and alertness. Having an early morning massage and acupuncture session would also help move the stagnant chi throughout the body and trigger certain energies that may be blocked due to the cold. Specifically, if you stimulate the appropriate acupuncture points and energy channels to warm and reactivate the Chi, you will feel more vigorous and alive. One of the best and most natural ways to treat the Winter Blues is to get more sunlight. Wake up early and open the shades in your bedroom to increase your exposed to natural sunlight. If your home or apartment does not get much natural sunlight, you can purchase a device known as a Light Box, which emits high intense light, producing similar healing effects of the sun. Another great way to beat the Winter Blues is to incorporate herbs such as Cinnamon Bark into teas which will help warm the body during cold times of the year (in addition to tasting delicious). It is also wise to avoid processed foods and eat whole grains for a healthier diet. Exercises such as walking, running, Chi Gong, Tai Chi, Yoga and Pilates are also important ways to re-balance your chi and stay healthier this winter season. In order to better help you beat the Winter Blues, I recommend contacting me to go over specific acupressure points, self massage, exercise and preparing the right foods and herbs that best suits you and your condition. Remember, I give these holistic health treatments in the privacy of your own home and during a convenient time that fits into your busy schedule. There are many more things you can do to stay healthy. Learning how to take care of your body is your responsibility; so overcome discomfort and illnesses by using the correct acupressure points, foods and herbs to treat and remedy your specific condition. Take your first step today to strengthen your Chi, uplift spirit, and achieve an overall better sense of health and well-being! As I have mentioned before, I send you these health bulletins because I care about you and your health. Please share these e-mails with friends and loved ones who may find this important information helpful and interesting in their paths for a healthier lifestyle. Happy Chinese New Year! With the best of health & happiness for 2009,

December 2008 Health Bulletin: Mind & Body Series – The Power of Yoga Dear Family, Friends, and Clients, I wanted to wish everyone a very Healthy and Happy Holiday season! With the holidays’ right around the corner, a great way to alleviate some added stress this holiday season is to incorporate yoga into your daily or weekly health care regiments. Yoga is a fantastic way to challenge you, both physically and spiritually! Many of you may think yoga is some sort of fluffy type of workout, however, some styles of yoga have been known to humble even the most ardent of gym goers. Yoga is all about the balance between the body and mind; flexibility and strength; and the harmonization of chi, otherwise known as the balance between Yin and Yang. When practicing yoga, the different postures help to align the body more symmetrically and you will conserve more energy by having your body run more efficiently. Yoga also helps to harmonize the body where the excess and deficient areas are in conflict. For example, during a yoga workout, one part of the body becomes compressed, while the other corresponding part becomes stretched; hence, the balance between Yin and Yang within body. There are various levels of yoga classes available to all enthusiasts and I would recommend beginners to take advantage of the more gentle yoga classes until they learn the physical limitations of their body. As with most forms of exercise, the body goes through stress as the muscles, tendons, ligaments, and bones begin to shape the body differently with each yoga workout. Such workouts often lead to pain, soreness, and discomfort. So, while it is important to exercise, we need to remember the importance of getting regular bodywork such as massage and acupuncture to strengthen the body and help reduce the risk of injury. Acupuncture and massage have been known to effectively reduce downtime from intense yoga workouts and heal your sore muscles. Yoga is also an excellent compliment to acupuncture and massage. The treatments I give are considered a passive form of healing, and balancing it with an active form of healing such as yoga, can help move your chi in ways that make my treatments more effective. As I mentioned in a previous health bulletin, professional athletes use bodywork to maximize their workout performances, so why shouldn’t you? Here are some benefits of yoga: Increased flexibility Proper toning of the muscles Increased nourishment to the joints, ligaments, and tendons Detoxification of the body Harmonize the body and mind Self-awareness and enlightenment Balance the nervous system Regulate blood pressure Increase energy levels Improves sleep Increases immune system Improves balance I used to be a regular practitioner of yoga and part of my New Year’s Resolutions is to get into better shape. In my own personal quest for better health and for those of my clients, I am excited to report that I have teamed up with the wonderful people at Dharma Yoga and Wellness located in the historic healing community of Yellow Monkey Village in Cross River, NY. Dharma was created to provide people with a multi-faceted refuge from the stresses of everyday life. Dharma provides a comprehensive Holistic Center featuring yoga classes, healing therapies such as acupuncture and massage, meditation, stress reduction, education and even sustenance for its clients. I have recently joined the Dharma team as an acupuncturist and massage therapist. Please click on the following link to learn more about this great healing center: http://www.dharmayogawellness.com. Hopefully, you will join me at Dharma in taking some yoga classes or to attend one of my upcoming seminars on holistic healing issues. There are many more things you can do to stay healthy this holiday season and incorporating yoga with regular acupuncture and massage treatments is a fantastic way to “spoil” your bodies! Please feel free to contact me to discuss your individual case to get you back on the right track to a healthier winter season. Remember, I give these holistic health treatments in the privacy of your own home and during a convenient time that fits into your busy schedule. You may also purchase gift certificates from me which makes a wonderfully unique holiday “healing” gift for friends and family!!! November 2008 Health Bulletin: Stress Management Series - Commuter Syndrome Dear Family, Friends, and Clients, In this month’s Health Bulletin I am focusing on how to effectively manage the stress caused by commuting, or more commonly known as "commuter syndrome". Recent statistics show that we are spending more and more time either in the car, on a train, or in a plane for transportation purposes. The increased amount of time spent sitting in a seat going from one place to another is slowly and negatively affecting our physical and emotional health. For example, do you get aches and pains in your neck and lower back from the time you spend sitting in traffic? Do you feel frustrated, angry and tense behind the wheel? Or have you been stuck in an uncomfortable airport while your flight has been delayed carrying heavy luggage with no place to sit? If you are looking to make your commute more enjoyable and reduce commuter related stress, please read on! The other day I happened to be watching a TV program called “The Doctors”. It is a daily talk show where four different MD specialists discuss various types of health concerns. The topic that caught my ear was a phenomenon they called “Commuter Syndrome”. Though I had never even heard of this specific syndrome, I was not surprised to know that long hours in the car can have a negative impact on one's health. Some of the health issues directly connected to commuting are as follows: 1. Increased blood pressure 2. Increased Stress and fatigue 3. Increased frustration 4. Road rage 5. Decrease in musculoskeletal posture leading to neck and back pain 6. Sciatica 7. Eye strain and soreness Many of the above factors occur instantaneously while commuting causing discomfort, pain and irritability. But the real problem remains the cumulative effect of years and years of traveling without proper ways to release these negative health effects. Day after day of driving to work in bumper to bumper traffic can make anyone's blood boil. So, how can we all manage this situation better and without the harmful health effects? In addition to my hours treating patients throughout the day in their homes, a large part of my day is spent commuting from location to location. Sometimes, I am fortunate when the destinations are local. Other times, I need to travel longer distances and spend more time behind the wheel. While no day is dull on the road, being aware of what tensions are present are important to correcting the problem. First of all, take notice of your posture. Are you sitting up straight? Avoid bringing your shoulders up towards your ears while driving. This contraction of the muscles tends to cause a stiff neck. Instead, relax your shoulders, take deep breathes and try to stretch your neck at a traffic light or while parked. Also, remember to take nice deep breaths, which will naturally help to lower your body’s blood pressure. If you are traveling long distances, it is also important to stretch your legs to avoid circulatory issues associated with being in a stationary position for an extended period of time. And stop clenching that jaw which may lead to a whole series of other unwanted medical conditions such as TMJ and headaches. Many of my past health bulletins have discussed the benefits of acupuncture and massage in treating many of the symptoms caused by Commuter Syndrome such as: hypertension, jaw tension (TMJ), musculoskeletal injuries, sciatica and unwanted stress. Please re-read these past bulletins to learn more or contact me for more detailed information. Or better yet, receive a treatment from me to feel the beneficial effects of massage and acupuncture first hand. In addition to my treatments, I would also strongly recommend incorporating daily exercise and yoga, tai chi, or chi gong, to help relax the mind and strengthen the body. There are many more things you can do to stay healthy and do not forget to wash those hands this autumn season! Please feel free to contact me to discuss your individual case to get you on the right track to a healthier fall and winter season. Remember, I give these holistic health treatments in the privacy of your own home and during a convenient time that fits into your busy schedule. There are many more things you can do to stay healthy. Taking care of your body is your responsibility, so learn how to overcome commuter syndrome by utilizing a correct posture to alleviate aches and pains, have a more positive attitude to reduce unwanted stress and to protect what’s most important, your life! After a long day of travel, I recommend schedule a massage and acupuncture session to help reduce the added stress caused by commuting. As I have mentioned before, I send you these health bulletins because I care about you and your health. Please share these e-mails with friends and loved ones who may find this important information helpful and interesting in their paths for a healthier lifestyle. October 2008 Health Bulletin: Effectively Treating Coughs with Herbal Medications Dear Family, Friends, and Clients, I have been sending you these health bulletins for over a year now and I hope you are finding the information practical and effective in your quests for healthier lifestyles. If you have any health/illnesses topics that you would like me to research and discuss for future bulletins, please email them to me, since your questions maybe helpful to others. I look forward to being the Dear Abby of Holistic Healing questions and concerns! This month’s health bulletin is for those of you that are already feeling run down and plagued with coughs from the common cold. Did you know that coughs can be effectively treated with Herbal Medicine? As the seasons change, the weather gets colder and the natural flow of chi in our bodies begins to slow and contract. In order to help ward off illnesses, it is imperative to maintain a strong immune system, eat right, get exercise, and consider incorporating regular massage and acupuncture therapy sessions into you & your families’ health care routines. I also strongly recommend the use of Chinese herbs to help boost your immune system and hopefully, avoid getting sick this fall and winter season. It is only October and I have already treated numerous patients for varying types of coughs. Did you know that not all coughs are the same? It is important to know what kind of cough you have, so the correct herbal treatments can be prescribed and lead to quicker recoveries. For example, dry coughs generally make you feel like your chest is on fire; according to Chinese medicine, “heat” has taken over the lungs which cause a dry and irritating cough. To treat a dry cough, I would recommend cooling herbs to alleviate the heat within the body. On the other hand, there are also cold coughs, which accompany a cold achy body. To treat a cold cough, I would recommend taking herbs that would warm the body. If either of these coughs are left untreated, phlegm may build up the lungs causing further discomfort and potential for bronchitis or lung infections. The Chinese call this a phlegm condition. To treat a phlegm condition, special herbs are needed to boost the immune system and help break up the phlegm in the lungs. Because of the complexity of the different types of coughs, there are a variety of herbal formulas to choose from. A practitioner of Chinese herbal medicine will generally incorporate numerous herbs to achieve the desired effect and at different stages of the illness, he or she may add or subtract herbs, as the condition improves. Under proper supervision, herbal medications are a safe, effective and holistic way to treat your condition and a great alternative to prescription drugs. Plus, herbs can be taken in a pill or capsule form for the added convenience of the patient. In addition to herbal therapy, I also recommend that my patients incorporate certain foods into their diets which will help alleviate coughs and related symptoms. Certain foods that assist with the healing process are: For hot coughs take cooling foods such as mint, cucumber, celery, asparagus, asian pear, peach, burdock root, cabbage, fig, mulberry, orange peel, and daikon radish. For cold coughs take warming foods such as cinnamon, ginger, garlic, grapes, cayenne, onion, scallion, and tangerine. For phlegm coughs take foods such as daikon radish, mustard green, leek, seaweed, turnip, and apricot kernel. Dietary improvements and incorporating herbs into your daily diet are a great and easy way to supplement your regular massage and acupuncture treatments. By eating healthier between treatments, you can cut down on sick time, strengthen your chi, and build your immune system. There are many more things you can do to stay healthy in these difficult times. Learning how to take care of your body is your responsibility, so learn how to overcome discomfort and illness by using the correct foods and herbs for your specific condition. Take your first step today and start eating right and feeling better! As I have mentioned before, I send you these health bulletins because I care about you and your health. Please share these e-mails with friends and loved ones who may find this important information helpful and interesting in their paths for a healthier lifestyle. Health Bulletin: The Benefits of Acupuncture & Massage for Labor & Pregnancy September 2008 Dear Family, Friends, and Clients, I hope everyone had a wonderful summer! Before I begin with this month’s Health Bulletin topic, The Benefits of Massage and Acupuncture for Pregnancy and Labor, I would like to briefly mention some newsworthy information regarding acupuncture used at the 2008 Summer Olympics. This past Olympics marked the first time acupuncture had a healing center at the Olympic Village in Beijing, which treated the best athletes in the world. While watching the Olympics, a full segment of the program was dedicated to acupuncture, explaining what it is and how it is helpful in treating sports injuries. One of the most notable athletes using acupuncture was Kerri Walsh, who took home the Gold medal in beach volleyball! There were many more athletes who used acupuncture during the Olympics and many had their own acupuncturist travel with them to the different events, just in case they needed an emergency treatment before going for the gold. I am sure athletes will continue this practice of utilizing acupuncture for sports related injuries upon their return to the States or elsewhere in the world. Now to the topic at hand. I wanted to discuss the benefits of massage and acupuncture for treating pregnancy and labor related conditions. Helping to relax and induce labor in future mothers in the privacy in their own home is not only a luxury but sometimes even a necessity. This is a special time where I have the honor to be part of something magical between mother and baby. Though I will never have the unique experience of giving birth, I have studied with some of the leading women in the field of natural childbirth, in order to better understand how to help facilitate the birthing process in a safe and natural way. During and especially towards the end of pregnancy, women experience an increase of stress built up in the muscles, tendons and even on the psyche. As we already know from empirical and scientific research, both massage and acupuncture are proven methods that effectively relax muscles and reduce stress. While in labor, muscles will tense up and can cause painful contractions. Areas that are most affected during pregnancy are the lower back, hips, sciatica nerve, and neck areas. Specialized massage techniques known as effleurage and light acupressure can help influence the muscles and cause the body to relax, allowing pregnant women to feel more comfortable during their pregnancies. Some benefits of using massage with pregnancy and labor are: Controlled blood pressure Increased circulation and lymphatic flow Reduced muscle tension Increased flexibility Reduced edema Increased nourishment to the fetus Better sleep Help with fatigue and faster recovery post-delivery Reduced pain during labor* *Please click on the link below to see the following study which proves that massage can help ease pain during labor and childbirth. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16835035 Some benefits of using acupuncture with pregnancy and labor are: Reduced nausea during pregnancy Reduced pain without medication Increased the mothers chi Reduced stress and anxiety Reduced blood pressure Providing a smoother and quicker labor experience* *Please click on the link below to see the following study which proves that acupuncture is effective in speeding up the labor process: http://www.bmj.com/cgi/content/full/334/7585/152-a?maxtoshow=&HITS=10&hits=10&RESULTFORMAT=&fulltext=acupuncture&searchid=1&FIRSTINDEX=0&resourcetype=HWCIT I also offer couples private pregnancy massage classes, where I teach techniques using acupressure and massage to husbands, to assist their wives during challenging times throughout the pregnancy. Remember, I give these holistic health treatments in the privacy of your own home and during a convenient time that fits into your busy schedule. There are many more things you can do to stay healthy during pregnancy such as eating well, proper exercise like yoga which will strengthen the core muscles in your abdomen to help with labor, deep breathing and meditation, proper posture, and remember to take time and enjoy your pregnancy by slowing things down and resting! August 2008 Health Bulletin: TMJ- Stop the Grind! How many of you grind your teeth at night? Or wake up with a sore jaw or headache? You may be suffering from "TMJ" which is short for Temporomandibular Joint Disorder. TMJ disorder is a painful condition located where the lower jaw bone (mandible) attaches to the skull (maxilla). This disorder can lead to painful conditions affecting the ears, face, head and teeth. The most common symptoms are clicking in the jaw, lockjaw, an uneven bite, ear pain, clogged sensation or hearing loss, tinnitus or ringing in the ears, grinding of the teeth, neck and shoulder pain and headaches. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) estimates that more than 10 million people may have TMJ! The NIH is currently engaging in a study to determine the causes of TMJ. To learn more details about this study, please click the following link : News in Health, January 2008 - National Institutes of Health (NIH) I am seeing a sharp increase in patients who have some degree of TMJ or mild tenderness in the jaw area which has lead to severe headaches, neck pain and sinus issues. There are many causes of TMJ including trauma, systemic diseases, structural problems, and braces in the mouth just to name a few. However, I believe that stress is becoming a main contributor to this growing medical condition. Just take a few moments now as you read this Health Bulletin and notice if you are clenching your jaw. With the increasing rise of stress in our daily lives, we will see more and more people with symptoms of TMJ in the near future. Acupuncture and massage are helpful and effective way to treat TMJ and the symptoms associated with it. These two healing modalities work by relaxing the muscles that are holding onto the tension in the jaw. Though each treatment is different, there are key local spots, specifically on the face and head, which I have found to be effective in alleviating the pain and discomfort caused by TMJ. One of the most effective points to treat TMJ is called Hegu and is located between the thumb and index finger. Massaging this point can greatly help to relax tension in the jaw and relieve the pain almost instantaneously. There are other options to help treat this condition such as mouth guards, local injections, medications, physical therapy, chiropractic care, mouth exercises, and surgery. One simple yet effective thing you can do when your TMJ is acting up is eat soft foods, avoid chewing gum, learn stress management techniques (see last months health bulletin on meditation), and exercise your jaw with gentle stretching techniques. If you would like to try a holistic treatment for your TMJ, please feel free to contact me to discuss your specific condition and we can begin an acupuncture and massage therapy routine in hopes of easing your pain. Remember, I give these holistic health treatments in the privacy of your own home and during a convenient time that fits into your busy schedule. There are many more things you can do to stay healthy and learning how to take care of your body is one of them. Take your first step today and give acupuncture and massage a try! July 2008 Health Bulletin: Daily Meditation- The Real Independence Day I hope you are having a great summer and enjoying this 4th of July holiday. On this special day of U.S. independence, I would like each of you to take a moment to consider how "dependent" we are to our minds and how we often become entrapped in our own thoughts. I would like to offer you a simple way to regain your personal independence from life's everyday stresses called meditation. One of my favorite quotes is that "meditation is the gateway, through which you arrive to the world of freedom." Anyone who truly understands mind-body healing realizes that it must come from within one's own inner core. Although it seems normal course to rely on prescription medications and invasive surgeries, none can compare to what you can do to heal yourself. Meditation is the ultimate in passive actions. We all live in a society where everybody and every mind is moving a mile a minute. In order to achieve a peaceful balance of body and soul, more of us should make the time to meditate. During my education in Oriental Medicine, I remember asking one of my Zen mediation teachers what is the difference between meditation and prayer? He told me that “praying was talking to God and meditation was listening to God.” I never forgot this statement, and in many ways it helped me to form a new understanding of how I saw the world. Whether you believe in a God, a higher power, or none at all, there is new research being conducted to show that meditation is a beneficial way to clear your mind and spirit. Five recent studies have been conducted in world renowned institutions proving that meditation can help you become more independent and escape some of the stresses that tends to overpower your mind. These studies show that daily meditation can improve focus and performance; meditation increased grey matter in the brain; the beneficial effect of Zen meditation on the brain; positive changes in the brain and immune system from meditation; and patients under the care of a psychotherapist who practices Zen meditation have better improvement rates than those that do not. Please click on this link for more detailed information on these studies: http://dhyantara.com/research.htm#doc2 The benefits of daily meditation can be felt by all of us! Even masters had to take the first step, and so can you. Just look at all the health improvements that meditation can offer you: -Increases blood flow and moderates the heart rate -Moderates respiratory rate -Balances blood pressure -Restores energy -Less sleep is needed -Better attention and concentration -Deeper level of relaxation -Reduces anxiety -Reduces PMS There are many ways one can practice meditation such as sitting in a quite place, focusing on your breath, taking a walk, making art, listening to music and many others. If you have an interest in this subject and want to grow your consciousness, please contact me to discuss which method is best for you. Remember, I give these holistic health treatments in the privacy of your own home and during a convenient time that fits into your busy schedule. There are many more things you can do to stay healthy and meditation is one of them. Constant inner peace and serenity can be yours. Take your first step today and meditate! As I have mentioned before, I send you these health bulletins because I care about you and your health. June 2008 Health Bulletin: Herbal Medicine - The Natural Remedy! As many of you already know, the past few weeks have been the perfect time to plant those beautiful flowers and delicious vegetable gardens! I have spent the last two beautiful weekends in my garden planting flowers, fruits, vegetables and herbs that my wife and I can enjoy all summer long. These activities have reminded me how beneficial certain food and herbs can be when added to one's everyday diet. Incorporating the right herbs into your daily regimen, as recommended by a qualified professional will help improve your body's overall immune systems in addition to treating a variety of ailments. Many of you know me as a body worker that utilizes massage and acupuncture to facilitate the healing process of various types of acute and chronic health conditions. Another important aspect of my practice is herbology and I regularly incorporate herbal medicine into my practice to treat all kinds of conditions such as gastro-intestinal disorders, chronic fatigue syndromes, respiratory conditions, rheumatologic conditions, cold and flus, and psychological problems. With 3,000 years of written history, the Chinese have perfected herbal formulas for the effective treatment of numerous types of medical conditions. One concept of Chinese herbal medicine that sets it apart from other herbal medicine is its use of many different herbs to achieve a desired goal. On average, an herbal formula may utilize 8-15 herbs. Almost every part of the plant is incorporated into the mixture. For example, we can use the fruit, leaf, stem, root, and twig of the Mulberry plant for conditions such as insomnia, dizziness, diabetes, cough and wheezing, red and dry eyes, arthritis and joint problems, pregnancy conditions, hypertension, and edema. Herbal medicine may be prescribed in a pill or tea depending on an individual's preference. Chinese herbal medicine has been proven to be a gentler and safer alternative to prescription medication. This natural and holistic remedy is an effective way to treat various types of medical conditions with virtually no side effects. Even doctors, such as oncologists, have been prescribing herbal medicine for the treatment for nausea caused by chemotherapy. Annals of Oncology, Advance Access, originally published online on January 17, 2007. Further research into the beneficial aspects of incorporating herbs into one's everyday diet is continuing, as individuals continue to look for a holistic and natural alternative to prescription medications. So, if you are interested in learning more about how herbs can help improve your overall health and vitality, please feel free to contact me to discuss your individual case. Remember, I give these treatments in the privacy of your own home and during a convenient time that fits into your busy schedule. There are many more things you can do to stay healthy and please do not forget to get plenty of exercise and use sunscreen when outdoors this summer! As I have mentioned before, I send you these health bulletins because I care about you and your health. Please share these e-mails with friends and loved ones who may find this important information helpful and interesting in their paths for a healthier lifestyle. May 2008 Health Bulletin: How Acupuncture and Massage Can Help You Combat Springtime Allergies Now that spring has officially sprung, you need to get your body ready for another intense allergy season, AKA hay fever and seasonal allergic rhinitis. Approximately, 35 million Americans suffer from seasonal allergies so you are not alone! One of the most effective holistic therapies for the treatment allergy symptoms is acupuncture and massage. These therapies can help alleviate many of the seasonal allergies symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, watery and itchy red eyes, and sinus headaches. So, why suffer from another springtime filled with allergies when acupuncture can get you back outdoors and smelling the roses! Acupuncture works by tapping into your own body’s pharmacy to balance and regulate the flow of chemicals to keep your energy in harmony. Scientific evidence has shown that when an allergy attack is triggered by pollen or other allergens, acupuncture stimulates the immune system thus warding off the symptoms caused by these allergic reactions. My treatments generally begin with massaging the nasal and sinus areas to loosen up any congestion. Then I apply a few key acupuncture points to the face and rest of the body to relieve the symptoms of congestion, headache and sinus pressure leaving the patient feeling better, able to breathe and without any side effects. In addition to these natural therapies, I have also found solace in doing regular neti pot sessions. Neti pot is an ayurvedic nasal irrigation tool to cleanse the nose and has a soothing and lasting effect. It looks like a magic lamp filled with warm saline water that you administer yourself. Many people have recently heard about it from Oprah Winfrey’s TV show with Dr. Mehmet Oz on its health benefits for colds, flus and allergies. In addition to reaching millions of people on her show, the neti pot went main stream when an article about it was written in the New York Times this past January. Please visit this link for a full copy of the article. http://www.nytimes.com/2008/01/03/fashion/03skin.html There are many things in addition to my combined acupuncture, massage, and herbal medicine treatments that one can do to reclaim their enjoyment of being outdoors this spring. If you interested in getting a neti pot and do not know where to get one, please feel free to contact me and I can provide you with a great weapon to fight against springtime allergies. Also, don't forget that Sunday, May 11th is Mother's Day! A perfect Mother's Day gift would be one of my massage and acupuncture gift certificates. To show my appreciation for all those mothers out there, I am adding an additional 15 minutes of massage to the treatment for each gift certificate purchased. Remember, I give these treatments in the privacy of your own home and during a convenient time that fits into your busy schedule. There are many more things you can do to stay healthy and please do not forget to get plenty of exercise and just enough sunshine! Please feel free to contact me to discuss your individual case to get you on the right track to a happy and healthy spring season. As I have mentioned before, I send you these health bulletins because I care about you and your health. Please share these e-mails with friends and loved ones who may find this important information helpful and interesting in their paths for a healthier lifestyle. April 2008 Health Bulletin: Spring Training - How Acupuncture Will Keep Your Injuries At Bay Spring is finally upon us and I am sure everyone is ready to get out and play ball! As many of you already know, acupuncture and massage therapy is widely used to treat various types of injuries. However, in the springtime, many of my clients suffer from sports related injuries due to months of inactivity from the winter and not being in as good of shape as they would like to be. So, before you hit the track, the tennis courts, softball fields and the golf courses, make sure you are loose and limber. I also recommend incorporating the many tools of Oriental medicine like acupuncture, herbs, massage, and nutrition to help reduce or avoid injuries all together. Whether you are battling a chronic sports injury or looking to prevent them, there are many things you can do to increase your chances of staying healthy and injury-free, one of which is getting weekly acupuncture/massage therapy treatments. Recent research shows that acupuncture is beneficial for treating tennis/golfers elbow, shin splints, neck pain, osteoarthritis in the knee, stress, and many other sports related conditions. Acupuncture works by: 1. Decreasing inflammation 2. Reducing swelling 3. Relaxing muscles and spasms 4. Decreasing bruising 5. Decreasing pain 6. Improving local blood circulation Many athletes will tell you that hard training and a lot of practice is the best way to get positive results. However, with increased exercise, more free radicals are generated and tend to wreak havoc on the body and especially, the muscles being worked out. You will need to take better care of your body with each strenuous workout making sure you stretch, properly hydrate your body and eat a well balanced diet. More and more athletes are jumping on the acupuncture bandwagon to experience the benefits of Oriental medicine. A quick search on the internet has shown that many people are using these modalities for recreational sports such as Olympic and professional athletes. The chart below shows just a few professional athletes that have benefited from acupuncture and have been true supporters of this type of healing modality. MLB David Cone Daisuke Matsuzaka David Eckstein Kris Benson Mark McGwire Vince Coleman Vernon Wells Chan Ho Park Tyler Johnson Ellis Burks B.J. It is so important to feed your body with nutritious meals and keep that chi moving. Please feel free to contact me to discuss your individual case to get you on the right track to a happy and healthy spring training season. I do this for two reasons, first, because I know you like as much massage as you can get. And second, the best way I can promote my service is through personal referrals, so thank you again for spreading the word about my holistic healing treatments! March 2008 Health Bulletin: Sleeping well and feel rejuvenated in the morning. Dear Family, Friends, and Clients, Before I get into this months health bulletin about maximize your sleep time, I want to update you on last months Facial Acupuncture - The New Holistic Facial, two weeks ago I certified in Facial rejuvenation acupuncture in a 3 day intensive workshop. It was taught by one of the leading practitioners in the field of cosmetic acupuncture. The techniques I learned were some of the most detailed and advanced procedures in acupuncture. These kinds were not basic, routine or simple and the effects from the treatment over time will speak for themselves. Now on to this month’s information. Are you feeling well rested in the morning? Adequate sleep is vital to good health and well-being; however, more and more people are not getting enough quality down time. Longer hours at work, running errands, family time and a list of other daily activities will keep you busy for days to come. If this describes you, then your lack or disturbed sleep could be affecting your immune system, weakening your over all health. Acupuncture has been shown to help relieve stress, and help you get to bed instead of counting sheep. Getting more quality sleep can increase your energy, improve your immune system, and reduce daily stressors. Oriental medicine views the awakened state as yang and sleep time as yin. Throughout the day your yang energy is constantly on the go, and your yin energy lies dormant until it is required for sleep. Once nighttime comes and your head hits the pillow the yin energy takes over to replenish you for the next day. However, for those who have insomnia, you will experience that your yang energy is still awake, roaming wild, unable to find its nighttime home and retreat inwards, thus your yin/yang energy will be out of balance and result in a poor nights sleep. Without the communication between the two halves, you may not feel whole, unless you do something about it. There are many root causes of disturbed sleep such as hormonal imbalances, pain, anxiety, depression, digestive disorders, and over thinking just to name a few. Acupuncture can treat many of the root causes of insomnia, and I find that acupuncture really excels by helping reduce stress that leads to over thinking, which leads to staying up late. I think most people lay awake thinking about their relationships, finances, and their work. Though acupuncture doesn’t directly help with these issues, it can help you relate to these situations in a more relaxed way allowing you to fall asleep faster and experiencing a much deeper nights rest. As of last year, a well known sleep medication Ambien was prescribed more than 23 million times, and this number seems to be growing. As with most medications side effects occur, for this drug some of them are; worsening sleep problems, depressed mood, thoughts of hurting yourself, unusual risk taking behavior, aggression, hallucinations, confusions, and many more side effects. Health alternatives are what I am providing to those who want something else, something natural. There are many things in addition to my combined acupuncture, massage, and herbal medicine, that one can do to reclaim their peaceful nights sleep, such as, regular exercise, breathing and meditation, avoid eating stimulating foods at night that are spicy, heavy meat dishes, alcohol, and caffeine. Also, don't forget that I give these treatments in the privacy of your own home and during a convenient time that fits into your busy schedule. There are many more things you can do to stay healthy and please do not forget to get plenty of exercise and vitamin C this winter! It is so important to feed your body with nutritious meals and keep that chi moving. Please feel free to contact me to discuss your individual case to get you on the right track to a happy and healthy New Year and with a younger appearance to go along with it! As I have mentioned before, I send you these health bulletins because I care about you and your health. February 2008 Health Bulletin: Facial Acupuncture - The New Holistic Facial! Dear Family, Friends, and Clients, It is a new year, a new month and a new day with many wonderful things to look forward to in 2008! But one thing we might not be looking forward to is the signs of premature aging. We all want to grow old gracefully, however, many of us have taken it to the next level in hopes of reversing the visible signs of the aging process. For example, many people are going under the knife, having plastic surgery or being injected with botox (botulism toxin A, a neurotoxin) or restyane (hyaluronic acid in gel form), and collagen (a substance derived from either cow or human tissue). While others of us are moisturizing their faces and necks with expensive creams designed to reduce wrinkles and improve the skin's elasticity. All of these efforts can work very well, some with longer lasting effects and some shorter, but many with serious and unwanted side effects. It is up to you to find the perfect fit in your quest for younger looking and healthier skin. But if you haven’t been thrilled with these choices to reverse the signs of the aging process, then keep reading for a new holistic alternative with minimal side effects and fantastic results! Cosmetic/Facial Acupuncture is now being used for revitalizing the face by many individuals who want to avoid the severe side effects of surgical face lifts, botex and restyane injections, chemical peels, and microdermabrasion. If you have not tried acupuncture for taking care of your inner self such as digestive, respitory or other internal conditions, how about trying it for your outer-self? The highly specialized techniques for facial acupuncture actually help firm up your face and reduce the appearance of wrinkles and crow's feet. Facial acupuncture has been a proven method to help us turn back the clock and enjoy younger looking wrinkle-free skin. The end goal of facial acupuncture is to decrease the signs of aging by treating the local and root problems that may be contributing to the wrinkles and lines on your face. Facial acupuncture works by increasing the chi and blood in your body and specifically, your face. By increasing the blood circulation in your face, the facial muscles are stimulated which over time, improves skin tone and reduces facial lines. Some results reported by people who have had facial acupuncture are: firmer skin, softer skin, balanced skin tone, reduced acne, and increased energy. For an example of what this treatment entails, please click on the below link and see for yourself the effective results from facial acupuncture: http://youtube.com/watch?v=0gECrui_2Qo Also, don't forget that I give these treatments in the privacy of your own home and during a convenient time that fits into your busy schedule. It is so important to feed your body with nutritious meals and keep that chi moving. Dear Family, Friends, and Clients, I want to wish you a Happy New Year with much health, happiness, and love. As with any new year, we look forward to many more memorable occasions to spend with family and friends and reflect on our pasts with hopes of improvement. I have thought hard about what topic to begin the New Year with. After much of my own personal reflection, the one thing that I noticed that many of us need to improve upon is willpower. I think that we can all agree that willpower affects our ability to keep our word and our New Years resolutions! Some of the most popular New Years resolutions are controlling our weight, quitting smoking and developing a better exercise routine. All of us here in 2008 have heard about the energy force called Chi. This type of energy is what I am trying to effect and balance as an acupuncturist, massage therapist, and herbalist. Sometimes the chi moves easily and sometimes it move moves very slowly due to deficiencies or excessive conditions in ones life. Especially after January 1, most people are in a state of overload whether it is from eating too much food, absorbing too much stress, or accumulating too many hours watching TV as a couch potato. One of the best things that acupuncture and massage accomplishes is stimulation of the chi and the movement of blood in the body. If you are having pain, acupuncture and massage increases the blood flow to facilitate healing. Acupuncture is now being used to help people stop smoking and to lose weight. In order to stop smoking, you need to want to quit or the treatments will not be as effective! Sometimes we just need a little push to get going, and once you commit yourself to getting help to quit, the hard part is over. That is not to say there wont be temptations along the way, but once you are on the path of understanding that your body is a temple, it will be easier to quit. The acupuncture for smoking cessation is done on the ears and follow up treatments will then incorporate the rest of the body to maintain a healthy mind and spirit. I have successfully treated people in one treatment, though some cases have taken longer. If you have been suffering from a weight problem, then you may want to consider using acupuncture to help with this effort. There may be many reasons why you are having trouble losing or maintaining your weight, from behavioral, emotional, psychological or physiological reasons. Acupuncture has been shown to affect the brain by releasing endorphins the feel good chemical, which may be the reason it has been useful in treating many conditions, including weight loss. We often eat in excess or make poor dietary decisions when we are stressed; acupuncture is a wonderful way to alleviate conditions related to stress. Now that I have your attention, are you interested in exercising? If so, there are many benefits that acupuncture has on exercise. Medical studies have proven that the combination of both acupuncture and massage will help improve mood function, pain reduction, stress and boost the immune system, just to name a few. Not only may acupuncture help to motivate you to exercise but regular treatments combined with massage will help you recover between workouts, allowing you to train harder and with fewer injuries. There are many more things you can do to stay healthy and do not forget to wash those hands this winter season! Please feel free to contact me to discuss your individual case to get you on the right track to a happy and healthy New Year. As I have mentioned before, I send you these health bulletins because I care about you and your health. Please share these e-mails with friends and loved ones who may find this important information helpful and interesting in their paths for a healthier lifestyle.
