FAQ
Does acupuncture work?
Acupuncture has been around for over 2000 years because it works. It is a wonderful treatment for many conditions. Please contact us to find out if acupuncture can help you.
According the National Institutes of Health (NIH):
"Acupuncture as a therapeutic intervention is widely practiced in the United States. While there have been many studies of its potential usefulness, many of these studies provide equivocal results because of design, sample size, and other factors. The issue is further complicated by inherent difficulties in the use of appropriate controls, such as placebos and sham acupuncture groups. However, promising results have emerged, for example, showing efficacy of acupuncture in adult postoperative and chemotherapy nausea and vomiting and in postoperative dental pain. There are other situations such as addiction, stroke rehabilitation, headache, menstrual cramps, tennis elbow, fibromyalgia, myofascial pain, osteoarthritis, low back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, and asthma, in which acupuncture may be useful as an adjunct treatment or an acceptable alternative or be included in a comprehensive management program. Further research is likely to uncover additional areas where acupuncture interventions will be useful".
What does acupuncture feel like?
The needles are so small that sometimes patients do not realize that the treatment has begun as the needle is inserted. Occasionally there will be areas that are more sensitive than others, but generally there is almost no discomfort.
Is acupuncture safe?
When acupuncture is performed by a qualified practitioner it is very safe. In 1996 the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the use of solid, metallic needles for acupuncture. Only pre-sterilized, disposable needles are used. This insures that there is no transmission of disease from patient to patient.
How long is each treatment?
The total treatment is 120 minutes. The acupuncture and massage portion is typically 90-100 minutes, the remaining time is reserved for discussion and for setup/cleanup. Longer treatments are available.
How many treatments are needed?
The number of treatments needed to alleviate specific conditions differs from individual to individual and depends on the condition and how long the condition has persisted. Generally, acute conditions require fewer treatments than chronic ones.
Initially in acute conditions, multiple treatments may be required the first week and then gradually reduced down to once a week until only maintenance treatments are needed. For chronic conditions, customized herbal remedies are often used in conjunction with the ongoing acupuncture treatment.
